Artist statement by Soynika Edwards-Bush, As told by her 6-year-old self:
We remember the journey that many people took before us. Voting meant more to them than what we can ever imagine. The women dressed up in their Sunday best to honor this day and voice their relevance. Sojourner Truth starts the line and is honored with cotton stems placed at her feet. She was a great woman with strength and courage. Granny, through her aches and pains, managed to get to the polls. Mr. John Lewis has always fought for us. He was even beaten by cops and attacked by dogs while marching for basic human rights for Black Americans. He holds the same dog that attacked him and others on Bloody Sunday. He’s not a bad doggy. The roses are to honor his bloodshed. You can see all the others in the back, while I stand out front with my doll, in my Easter Pink dress. The people in the line have come thru struggles too. The boy was hung for taking a stand. Mrs. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is there too. She fought so people would know being a girl is important too. She wanted us to be able to speak and live as an individual, with our own thoughts and voice.
